As a Kiwi company, our customers expect us to give back to local neighbourhoods, to support the things that matter locally and to make a positive contribution right across New Zealand.
So this year, every Z station is giving $5,000 to neighbourhood groups which help people who need it. That’s over $1 million across the country to do Good in the Hood!
Good in the Hood is the ultimate in keeping it local. So instead of someone in head office deciding who to support, Z’s people on the ground choose the groups for their station to get behind.
In November 2012, thousands of neighbourhood groups applied to be part of Good in the Hood. From these applications every Z station selected four neighbourhood groups to receive a share of $4,000.
To be successful, groups had to help people who need it. They also had to be active in the area around the Z station they applied to. Finally, the request had to be for a specific project or to fulfil a specific need.
In March 2013, we gave our customers an orange token. This orange token was pretty powerful because they could use it to vote for the group they wanted us to support. At the end of month we counted the votes and the corresponding share of the money each of the four groups got.
During March thousands of people also hunted for tokens in our online Token Hunt and used them to vote for their favourite group. The top 10 groups in the Token Hunt received an extra $500 on top of their other funds.
For those of you good with maths, you’ll have spotted that there’s an extra $1,000 per Z station to be given away. The local retailers who operate each Z Station will use this to support other causes throughout the year – so that we can make the good go a bit further.
The successful groups have been announced and we've presented their cheques. You can learn a little bit more about them and check out the good they're doing in their hood here.
We’re committed to Good in the Hood and we’ll be running it again. If you’d like us to send you an email reminder when applications reopen, sign up at the top of this page.
During November 2012, neighbourhood groups or projects applied to be part of Good in the Hood.
During February 2013, the successful groups and projects were contacted and announced here.
During March 2013, Z customers were given an orange token to vote for one of the four groups at each station.
$4,000 per station was divided amongst the four successful groups, according to the number of customer votes they received.
Each of the four groups being supported by every Z Station will get a share of $4,000. But how much each group gets is up to you.
When you visit a Z station in March and make a purchase you’ll be given an orange token which you can use to vote for the group you want us to give the money to. The more votes a group gets the greater share of the money they’ll get. For example, if one group gets 50% of the votes, they’ll get 50% of $4,000 which is $2,000.
Every group we’re supporting will also be in line for an extra $500 if they’re one of the ten groups nationwide who get the most votes in our online Token Hunt by the end of March.
You can read all the fine print in our Terms and Conditions.
The voting is running for one month – from 1 – 31 March 2013.
You can support your favourite group in two ways:
1. By making a purchase and voting for them in store at the Z Station that’s supporting them. Go here to see a complete list of the groups each Z Station is supporting.
2. By voting for them in our on-line Token Hunt.
Just make a purchase at your local Z – for every purchase (excluding cigarette only purchases) you’ll get one token.
Every group who applied received an email from us at the beginning of February letting them know whether they were successful or unsuccessful. All of the successful groups are also listed here .
Choosing the four groups to support at every station was a tough decision for the local teams, as there were a lot of worthy groups. Unfortunately, we can’t support everything so they were forced to make some tough decisions.
