Z Energy is upgrading its national network of truck stops to add Z DEC on pump at 12 more sites over the next few months, making life on the road easier for drivers of SCR vehicles.

Z DEC (Z Diesel Emission Cleaner) is already available at Z Sanson on State Highway 1, and Z Sylvia Park truck stop, Mt Wellington, Auckland. Four more Z truck stops will get Z DEC on pump in May – starting with Turangi and Whangarei over the next week, then Grove Road (Blenheim) and Seaview (Wellington) later in the month.

Another eight sites will have Z DEC on pump by July – Hamilton, Hewletts Road (Mount Maunganui), Sawyers Arms Road (Christchurch), Dunedin, Highbrook, Pokeno, Napier and Roscommon Road (Wiri).

Z DEC is a diesel exhaust fluid that, in conjunction with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, is designed to help reduce vehicle emissions, namely nitrogen oxides.

Z’s General Manager Commercial, Lindis Jones, says Z is rolling out Z DEC at selected Z truck stops nationwide to make it more convenient for drivers to fill up on both their diesel and exhaust fluid with Z.

“We know many major engine manufacturers and their customers have chosen SCR technology for their vehicles to meet emission reduction targets. Now Z is making it more convenient for SCR vehicle drivers to fill up through its national network of selected truck stops.

“We’ll have Z DEC available at 14 sites by July, providing national coverage for customers who are choosing SCR technology to reduce their vehicle emissions. It’s about making life on the road easier, and offering a product that more of our customers are looking for as they turn to cleaner emission vehicles.

“We reckon customers will appreciate having more locations where they can top up both their diesel and Z DEC at one stop, and the added convenience of being able to pay for both diesel and Z DEC on the same fuel management card – their Z Card,” Lindis said.

“One of the important things we’ve considered in rolling out our Z DEC network is the need to handle diesel emissions fluids carefully because of their ammonia content. Filling up at the pump means you don’t have to worry about the issues that go with buying and storing diesel exhaust fluids (DEFs) in bulk containers. Containers need to be stored, cleaned and disposed of in a safe way that takes the eco-toxicity of DEFs into account – for example, it’s vital they’re not just washed out with water and tipped down a drain. Z’s network and the Resource Consents process we have worked through, reflects this. It’s one less thing for our customers to worry about,” Lindis said.

Z DEC is just another way Z is looking to deliver on our environmental and sustainability objectives. Other examples include waste reduction, water reduction, upgrading lighting to LED and biodiesel.

Background information

  • The Z DEC network will cover the Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Central North Island, Manawatu, Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago regions.
  • Z DEC is used only in SCR vehicles. It cannot be used for EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) vehicles, or any other non-SCR vehicles.
  • It is not mixed with diesel, but stored in a separate tank in the vehicle. Z DEC (like other diesel emissions cleaners) must not be put directly into a diesel tank as this will damage the vehicle.
  • Drivers can find their nearest Z truck stop with Z DEC at Z’s site locator at z.co.nz/findZDEC. More information on Z DEC can be found at z.co.nz/ZDEC
