About Z

Getting Z products to you

So how does our fuel get to you? Where you need it, when you need it?

Getting the product to New Zealand

Almost all of the fuel that Z Energy sells in New Zealand comes from overseas. Around 70% of this Fuel is made from crude oil sourced from the Middle East and Far East. Z purchases this crude from overseas suppliers and ships it to New Zealand. The crude oil is refined into fuels at New Zealand’s only refinery, operated by Refining NZ Ltd at Marsden Point near Whangarei. For information on the refining process, visit the NZRC’s learning centre.

Z purchases the other 30% of fuel we sell to you from Refineries mainly in Singapore, Korea and Japan, and ships it to NZ.

Getting the product around the country

There are four ways that we get fuel from the NZ Refinery to storage terminals:

  1. A 168-kilometre pipeline (owned by Refining NZ Ltd) which runs from the refinery to the storage tank Terminal at Wiri, in South Auckland. This pipeline delivers petrol, diesel and jet fuel for the Auckland market.
  2. Two coastal tankers called the 'Kakariki' and the 'Torea' (each capable of carrying 37 Million Litres on each voyage) distribute petrol, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oils and bitumen to storage tank terminals at ports all around the country.
  3. A small amount of fuel is delivered directly to customers from a storage tank terminal adjacent to the refinery itself.
  4. Ships of all sizes can get fuel in Auckland directly from our 3,500 ton bunker ship 'Awanuia'. The Awanuia collects fuel directly from the refinery.

Getting the product to you!

The fuel we sell to you is held at storage tank terminals all around New Zealand: Marsden Point, Auckland, Wiri, Mount Maunganui, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Lyttelton, Christchurch (Woolston), Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff.

Our contracted haulage company Hooker Pacific runs the road tankers that take our fuel from each of these terminals and deliver it to our service stations, truck stops and airports and directly to our commercial, aviation, bitumen and marine customers.

Z Energy’s logistics team co-ordinates these 40 or so road tankers that work around the clock, ensuring you can buy the fuel you need when you need it.

And that’s how it’s done. Simple really!
