Often, recording incidents feels like an obligatory task that we’re required to do and often we measure the incident once it happens. While reporting incidents that have happened is important, the real insights usually come from recording and analysing the causes of incidents,
Obviously if you had a car accident, this would be reported as an incident. But do you record against the number of times that a driver was fatigued? Or if a driver was speeding?
You manage what you measure, so if you only measure the end result it’s hard to make real change in your business. However, if you measure at all points where incidents could have happened then you can address those issues and hopefully avoid the car accident in the first place.
