Each year Roading New Zealand hosts the Roading Excellence Awards in order to promote leadership, excellence and best practice in the provision of land transport infrastructure and celebrate success. As a company that has a fair bit to do with travelling on New Zealand roads, either ourselves or through our customers, we have been very happy to support the awards since they started in 2005. Best practice, industry leadership and excellence are things that mean a lot to us.
The winner this year was the Newmarket Viaduct Replacement Project undertaken by the NGA (Northern Gateway Alliance) Newmarket Alliance which involved extensive seismic strengthening on a critical link in Auckland’s roading network – one that is used by more than 215,000 vehicles every day.
Roading New Zealand Chief Executive Chris Olsen said that while all the award entrants showed a high degree of innovation and were of a great calibre, the NGA Newmarket Alliance was simply an outstanding project that demonstrated many innovations that enhanced the project and reduced the cost to the client.
The competition judges said the project demonstrated what can happen when the industry collaborates and thinks outside the box.
Other Z customer award winners were:
• Best Practice Award for People in association with InfraTrain New Zealand went to “The Road to Leadership Excellence” by Downer
• The Maccaferri Excellence Award for a Medium Road Project went to Higgins Contractors, NZ Transport Agency, and MWH for the Manawatu Gorge Slip.
