Meet Richard Norris, Z Treasurer based in Wellington.
Z Position: Richard Norris, Treasurer
Z Career: I joined Z in 2010 at a really exciting time, just after Infratil and the NZ Super Fund bought Shell’s downstream New Zealand assets. Disconnecting from an integrated multinational oil company meant we needed our own Treasury function to manage financial risk. In our business that means protecting our earnings and balance sheet from the volatility of things such as fluctuating interest rates, foreign exchange rates, barrel prices and carbon risks – pretty meaty topics.
Favourite part of the job: Everything. Being part of an industry that touches every fibre of commerce and affects everyone is enormously energising. The downstream fuels distribution market exposes the company to a wide range of financial risks that require constant assessment of market conditions and management of exposures. Working with a relatively small company you get to interact with a wide range of people with different skills and experience which allows you to continually grow.
Vision for the future of Z Energy: I would like to remain a part of a company that continues to grow and adapt to the changing macro environment to meet customer needs while developing new revenue streams, growing shareholder returns and developing its people.
Hobbies/interests outside of work: Despite a couple of broken down old knees I still enjoy getting out on skis, my mountain bike, surfing, diving and fishing... when I’m not attending to my second job as a taxi service for three fantastic children.
