The Classics of the Sky Tauranga City Air Show has become a highlight in the events calendar, with each show getting bigger and better, and this year was no exception. In fact, this year’s event was extra special with an emphasis on World War I, as they commemorated the centenary of the outbreak of “The Great War”. The crowd were treated to a great display from the German Fokker Tri Plane (made famous by the legion that was the “Red Baron”) and the British Sopwith Camel Bi and Tri Planes, and the stories of the brave young men that flew them.
The crowd also saw a number of our World War II heroes – “The Warbirds”. In this stable of aircraft, all the heavy weights were in attendance – Corsair, the Messerschmitt, the Yak, the Kittyhawk, and the Harvards. When the hair on your neck prickles with the sounds of the engines above, you know you’ve been treated to the Spitfire, and the Mustang. The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) also gave the crowd an incredible show, displaying their wares with the big C-130 Hercules, the very busy P-3K Orion. The Navy also made an appearance with the highly technical Kaman SH-2G (NZ) Seasprite Helicopter.
In between these displays and flyovers, the Strikemaster and the Dragonfly jets showed us what they could do. Overall it was a great day with fantastic aerial & static displays and plenty of things for the kids to do. Have a look at www.facebook.com/Classicflyersnz for a taste of what was on offer.
We’re proud to support the Classics of the Sky Tauranga City Air Show, and we look forward to attending the air show again in 2016.
