Cruising with the Awanuia

Our customers come in all shapes and sizes with all sorts of needs, but most importantly they need us to keep them moving.

Z provides fuel to ships in Auckland through the Awanuia, a purpose-built ship, referred to as a ‘barge’, that can transfer fuel oil or gas oil directly into the customers’ vessels, either in port or at anchor out at sea.

The Awanuia’s usual beat is to carry 3,500 metric tonne of fuel from Marsden Point to Auckland, an eight hour trip, and then to fuel the vessels directly in Auckland.

The Awanuia keeps our customers moving in the most convenient way possible – they don’t need to book at a refuelling berth, because the Awanuia can pull up alongside them wherever they are located in the Port.

In the peak of the cruise ship season the Awanuia can be pretty busy filling the ships at Queens Wharf and Princes Wharf. Most cruise ships only carry two weeks of fuel so access to re-fuelling services is essential.

Fuelling cruise ships, commercial and container ships which call into the Port of Auckland means the Awanuia plays a crucial part in Port activities, and allows our customers to focus on their business.
