As a New Zealand company, we believe we’ve got a backyard worth looking after. This is why we’re investing $26 million in building a biodiesel plant, to make a more sustainable fuel that helps customers reduce their carbon intensity.
Located in Wiri, Auckland, it will be the first commercial scale biofuel production facility in New Zealand and will use best practice and proven technology to manufacture high quality biodiesel.
December will see a major milestone in the construction of the plant, with the installation of a biodiesel distillation column. This is a sophisticated piece of kit which has the ability to remove trace contaminants from the finished product. The ability to clean up the biodiesel by distillation enables Z to use a plentiful local resource, inedible tallow – a by-product of the New Zealand agricultural industry, to produce high quality biodiesel that exceeds New Zealand biodiesel specifications.
Z’s biodiesel will be available to customers as a B5 blend (up to 5% biodiesel blended with ordinary diesel) in the Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions from around the middle of 2016. Expanding the supply of biodiesel to more of New Zealand will depend on customer demand, so let us know if you’re interested!
