At Z we want to be famous for having awesome food and drink on the go, and our strategy for achieving this is to:

  • launch new categories and product ranges that deliver a high-quality, differentiated food and drink offer
  • be a great alternative place to stop for breakfast, lunch and snack products

In December 2014, we trialled five frozen yoghurt units at sites. Its reception led to us launching an RFP for the frozen yoghurt project (Froyo) which was won by a company called Popstars.

Popstars were chosen for their ability to design, fabricate and deliver to site.

In addition to the original format we asked them to meet two key challenges:

  1. Changing the design and offer by including a 3 barrel frozen Coke machine, thus creating a new destination within our C-Store called Chillzone
  2. Become the Main Contractor for the end-to-end programme delivery

Both Popstars Directors, Jonty and Brian, embraced the challenge!

The Popstars and Z Collaboration

The Chillzone ongoing rollout is a great success.

In only a few short months since the RFP, we have re-designed the offer, prototyped the new cabinet options, piloted it on site and rolled out 8 stores prior to Christmas.

The inclusion of the Coke offer changed the implementation process substantially, requiring additional services works, CO2 gas, and landlord and building consents etc.

Each new challenge was tackled with an agility and flexibility essential in these types of rollouts across both Popstars and Z, and the implementation accomplished to date speaks for itself.

While Popstars has had a working relationship with Z Energy for the last 5 years, the last 12 months have been the most rewarding for them. Since winning the frozen yoghurt RFP they have grown significantly as a business and have:

  • Joined ISN and hold A Grade status, overhauling their HSSE thinking and profile 
  • Invested in new staff, training and equipment
  • Improved their local environmental impact 
  • Significantly matured their documentation standards
  • Gained valuable experience in national rollout logistics

The stand out for us at Z is how Popstars, as a small to medium size business, have managed the ISN accreditation. This says a tremendous amount about their expertise in their field and the skills and experience they bring to the table.

Jonty, Brian and their Popstar’s team understand and appreciate the Z Why and have seamlessly included Z’s Values into their working ethos. They are knowledgeable, adaptable, open to change and willing to challenge us to get to a better outcome. This has made our journey together on this venture both rewarding and enjoyable, and we look forward to future collaborations.
